In this article, we will taking an example of a 2 BHK home, in order to understand how you can calculate the total load requirement of your house.

But before knowing that, let us understand first what is the basic function of an inverter and inverter battery.
Lets talk about inverter first: Inverter mainly has two functions.
First is to charge battery by using electricity supplies to the house.
Secondly, Providing electricity to all the lines that are connected to your inverter, by taking electricity stored in the battery for the utilization, when the lights go off, In other words we can say that the inverter is basically the brain and the battery is the body. All the electricity is stored inside the body i.e. inside the battery and the inverter is a brain which tells where to consume that stored electricity. Where to use?
The capacity of the inverter depends on how many planes you can run on it. i.e., the greater the capacity of the inverter, the more total load capacity appliances you can run on it, inverter capacity is measured in VA.
Let us now talk about inverter battery: the size of inverter battery is measured in AH. Inverter Battery stores the electricity in itself and when lights goes off, the inverter uses the stored electricity from the battery to run the electrical appliances. Therefore, more the AH, more will be the electrical backup.
Let us now know how the size of inverter and inverter battery is calculated. But before that you have to calculate. Total requirement of your house.
Total Load Requirement Calculation:
Let us assume you live in an 2BHK Home/flat
when light goes off. you tend to use
3 fans = 3fan X 80 watt(taking wattages on higher end, in order to get higher value)
6 LED Bulb = 6 X 15 watt = 90 Watt
1 TV = 120 Watt
1 Laptop = 80 Watt
Net Load = 530 Watt
Load Requirement = 530 Watt + Factor of Safety (25%)
Total Load Requirement = 662.5 Watt = 660 Watt (Approx.)
Size of Inverter in VA Calculation:
Size of Inverter in VA = Total Load Requirement / Inverter Efficiency
Inverter never work on 100 % efficiency so lets take it 80%
= 660/0.8= 825 VA = 900 VA (Approx.)
Size of Battery in AH Calculation:
Size of battery in AH= (Total Load X Backup Time) / Battery Voltage
Lets assume we want to take at least 3.5 hours of backup from a 12 volt battery
= 660 X 3.5/12
=192.5 AH = 200 AH (Approx.)
So now you can understand from this example how we can calculate total load requirement of your house, the size of inverter in VA and the size of battery in AH.
In the example of this 2 BHK house, we have taken a battery backup of 3.5 hours and inside it we have used all the appliances simultaneously but it never happens. When the lights go off, we do not use all the appliances at once. Therefore, when we see in normal condition, we will see the same backup of 4.5 or even more than that and the higher the AH of the battery, the more the backup will increase.
